How to Improve Sleep and Recovery with Data?
Fact one: sleep is one of the most important factors supporting recovery after training. Fact two: you don’t need data from the Cheetah 2 Pro, Active 3 Premium or Helio Strap to know that you had a good night’s sleep.
But do you remember how you slept a few days ago? And there’s no point even asking how well you slept a week ago. These are simply things we tend to forget. Yet how we feel today and whether we are ready for a harder workout also depends on how well we recovered over the previous days and weeks — and therefore, on how well we slept.
So, if you have been training hard for the past few weeks while also sleeping poorly, one good night’s sleep is unlikely to be enough to fully recover and prepare your body for another demanding workout.
One metric that helps illustrate our battery level is HybridCharge. Its calculations can take into account dozens of data points, including training load, activity outside of workouts, the duration and intensity of your daily work, nutrition, as well as rest and recovery.
For example, if your HybridCharge level is 50 out of a maximum of 100, one or even two good nights of sleep may not be enough to bring the score up to 90. That’s because recovery, just like training, is a process that takes time. Depending, among other things, on your level of fatigue, age and daily workload, some people will recover faster than others.
DEEP SLEEP: A KEY PART OF RECOVERY
One thing, however, remains true for everyone: we need good-quality sleep. And that is influenced by a range of factors, including diet, stress levels, sleep regularity, as well as sleep duration and structure.
One of the key components of sleep is deep sleep. This is when the body carries out important processes related to physical recovery.
Deep sleep accounts for a relatively small part of the night. In adults, it typically makes up around 10–20% of total sleep, although this proportion also varies with age. If you sleep for eight hours, that translates into an average of around 50–100 minutes of deep sleep. It is also worth remembering that deep sleep is not one long, uninterrupted period, but occurs in several stages throughout the night.
By monitoring your sleep regularly, you can start identifying your own patterns after just a few weeks. Data available in the Zepp App shows, among other things, the different stages of sleep, including deep sleep.
You may discover, for example, that you most often enter deep sleep between 11 p.m. and midnight, while deep sleep periods also occur later in the night but are much less frequent and last only a few minutes. This kind of insight can have real practical value. If you want to improve your sleep quality, you may find that going to bed regularly, before midnight, helps you avoid missing the period when you are most likely to get deep sleep.
It is also worth looking at other data available in the Zepp App. Many of us run recreationally. We have jobs, responsibilities at home and other commitments. Both work and everyday life are priorities that we need to balance with our passion for sport. In this case, data from the Zepp App can provide an additional source of information.
USING RECOVERY DATA TO PLAN YOUR TRAINING
When putting together your training plan, check which days you tend to sleep best and when your HybridCharge is usually at its highest. Based on this, you can try to identify the days when it may be best to schedule harder running workouts, such as long intervals or tempo runs. When it comes to demanding sessions, well-planned recovery can make a huge difference.
The data may show, for example, that although you don’t have to get up early for work on Saturday, the accumulated fatigue from the entire working week is still noticeable. In that case, Sunday may turn out to be a better day for a harder workout, while Saturday could be reserved for an easy run or recovery.
Of course, data from wearable sports devices should not replace paying attention to how your own body feels. However, it can help you identify patterns that you simply don’t remember from day to day. And that is where their greatest value lies: they allow you to look at recovery not just through the lens of a single night, but across entire days and weeks — and even months.
